Plot
Francisca Rodríguez is an orphaned seamstress living in a house with her abusive and schizophrenic mother, Juliana. She is assisted in caring for her by her two adoptive sisters, Elena and Margarita. The family is comprised of a jovial, hard-working patriarch who manages a local store and three sons: Arturo, who is a drug dealer; Ramón, who is a mechanic; and Alfonso, who is the best student in his class and wants to be a lawyer. Ramón, his wife Rita, and his children Carmencita and Javier would love for Francisca to leave the family, but Francisca stays. Juliana hates Francisca, and she does everything she can to make Francisca's life miserable. She is abusive, possessive, and jealous of Francisca's relationship with her husband Arturo, whom she also hates. She does whatever she can to make him look bad, and she treats Francisca worse than even her own mother.
After Francisca's mother dies, she takes over the care of her three adoptive sisters, which they are very grateful for. Although Arturo is considered to be a very loving husband, he does not pay much attention to his wife Carmencita, and only wants to date other women. Carmencita is a beautiful and intelligent young woman. She falls in love with her teacher, Diego, and they have a son, Antonio. She is constantly worried that her father will not marry her off to someone of a good family. Although Arturo is very talented, he is not very intelligent, and he always fails at everything he tries. He is extremely rude and obnoxious, and he bullies both his wife and his son. Francisca, who loves him, tries to get him to change, but to no avail. He is constantly taking drugs and drinking in the neighborhood, and he also pays little attention to his family.
